Back on the trail again today. A cheeky 5am wake to pack and eat breakfast followed by a 7am start, Lunch at 11am and finally made it to our overnight at 5.30pm.
The trek itself was down one side of the mountain across the river then back up the other side. And it was hell. Leaches everywhere, the little bastards are so quick and tenacious. They wave about in the air looking for a meal. They bite through trousers and socks, have a feed and then drop off. Even with socks tucked into my trousers., I still had three bites on my feet.
The walk down the mountain was steep but relatively straightforward, once across the rope bridge in the valley the climb up the other side was just up the side of the mountain for 2 hours, so much so that you were above the rope bridge, scary stuff.
Topped the day off with a practice CASEVAC medical emergency. Catherine and I had discussed when to do it although it still caught me out as I was at the head of the trail and carrying one of the emergency kits. This meant that after a very tiring day I had to run all the way back to the rear of the line, some 100m back, with a 20kg backpack on!! Good news is that Catherine's broken ankle was cured after about 20 mins!
Arriving at the hostel, just before dark, quick freezing cold shower and a change of clothes. Then news of a snake sighting, backed up with another sighting was enough to frighten half the group. Good news is that the Hostel owners ran outside and managed to cut the snakes tail off before it disappeared into the stonework. Apparently the snake won't die but it will now be mighty pissed off.
35,000 steps today and I felt every single one!
